This half day course is open to all Advanced HCAs who are currently administering adult vaccinations to the Practice Population. It is focused on Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio booster vaccination for adults only (over 18 years) who have not completed a primary schedule. The course requirements are that the HCA has existing skills in sharps management such as phlebotomy and is receiving annual updates for immunisations and CPR and anaphylaxis.
All necessary documentation for the administration of the vaccine will be provided, to include a competency framework to use with the assessor in practice and legal frameworks for administration of medicines.
HCAs that attend this course will be undertaking advanced practice that recommends a minimum of two years’ experience in primary care and evidence of training to meet national minimum standards.
Course Content
- Understanding Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio as disease risks
- Knowledge of DTP vaccination
- NMC guidance for medicine management and use of patient specific directives
- Safe storage and handling of vaccines including infection control
- Risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
- Vaccination technique
- Consultation and procedure
Learning Outcomes
- To provide HCAS with the knowledge and skills required for the procedure of administering DTP vaccination
- To provide the HCA with education and resources to support vaccination delivery
- Increase awareness in the legal issues, accountability and prescribing legislation through delegation
- To provide the mechanisms for the HCA to be signed off as competent by a trained nurse in their workplace and follow the protocols and framework supplied for safe practice
