This course is open to all staff within Primary who are managing wound care and assessing the lower limb for compression treatments.

The course will investigate causes, risks and implications in relation to ulceration, oedema, skin problems and quality of life.

Discussion will include the benefits of compression to include individualised care / lifestyle planning and self-care strategies.

The focus will be on prevention and wound improvement, empowering the patient and supporting the National Wound Care Strategy for the Lower Limb management.

The day will include practical workshops in compression therapy choices, when and how to apply them, formulary products, practical application, and the link to ABPI.

Learning Outcomes

The Practitioner will be able to:

  • Understand the new National Recommendations and how to manage the change in practice including the importance of ulcer prevention, compression without ABPI, maintaining healing and core treatment
  • Recognise venous and associated diseases in the lower leg, understanding the implication/connection of the Leg
  • Assessment/Doppler as to eligibility for compression and focus on patient choice
  • Understand the importance of undertaking good skin care, cleansing & management routines under compression
  • Identify, order, measuring and applying compression correctly with knowledge of when to recall for re-assessment, and/or educate and support the self-caring patient
