Leg Assessment, Doppler & Compression Therapies

This Event Has Passed
This event has passed and can no longer be booked.

This interactive and informative day is for Registered Practitioners (GPN) and HCAs who are caring for patients with Leg Ulcers or at risk of ulceration.

The morning session will focus on the knowledge and skills for assessing lower limbs and completing and interpreting a Doppler test, (or for HCAs supporting the GPN in undertaking the procedure).

The learner will explore all aspects relating to recognising and managing types of ulceration and other leg conditions, e.g. oedema, plus exploring the links with other underlying health and lifestyle risks.

The afternoon will explore venous disease/ulceration by understanding what venous disease is, how to recognise it and the main treatment strategies to enable the patient to wear compression.

Key resources to support the clinician will be discussed, considering e-learning to consolidate competency (capability).

The day will include a 'Doppler' practical demonstration including A.B.P.I. calculation, listening to pulses and demonstrations of applying compression bandaging, hosiery and wraps.

Learning Outcomes

The Practitioner will be able to:

  • Identify the main characteristics of leg ulceration using the new National Guidance, recognising the Red Flags risk factors and to make the link between health & lifestyle and long-term positive outcomes
  • Discuss and observe practical ABPI Demonstration, understand the importance of Vascular Screening (Doppler) and undertake/calculate all results in conjunction with the holistic assessment so to aid planning and/or referral
  • Recognise venous and associated diseases, linking the Leg Assessment/Doppler as to eligibility to have compression, and focus on patient choice
  • Engage in a compression Workshop to consider different types of compression including measuring and applying compression correctly plus when and how to recall for re-assessment, and support the self-caring patient if appropriate
  • Access ongoing learning resources and consider how to gain capability in both skills
